Subject: 68040 vs 486 speeds
This is probably like preaching to the choir, but here are some test results
of a large fortran code on various machines, including 486 and 68040. This
code does ab-initio x-ray absorption calculations and is loaded with
transcendentals and uses complex*16 very heavily, so this is a very "float"
intensive benchmark. It has the strength that it is a large complicated code,
so unlike things like whetstone, it is not susceptible to simple-minded
"optimization". I think that, within the bounds set out above, this is a
pretty good test of cpu speed. Of course, it also tests compilers! The
results are:
12 min Epson 386 25 MH Watcom f77/386 compiler with optimization
6 min 2 sec SUN SPARC 1 f2c + cc
6 min ? 486 50 MHz Lahey f77 dos exender, 2.7 Meg
5:20 ? 486 25 MHz Microway NDP mf77 dos extender
4:56 SGI 4D320 7 users on the machine
4 min ? 486 25 MHz Watcom f77 dos extender
3:03 Quadra 700, Absoft f77 3.2, standard optimizations, no cache
55 secs Convex 240
29.795s Cray YMP-8 (cpu time) and 30.171s wallclock time, using 12.3%
of the 8-cpu machine
17 sec DEC alpha
An earler, simpler, version of the same code gave the results:
times listed are real times (i.e., wristwatch times)
12:40 20 MHz Dell 386 (with 387),
10:30 25 MHz Epson 386 (with 387) MS Fortran 4.0
10:00 microVAX II
6:00 VAXstation 3200
3:30 Gateway 25 MHz 486 (Microsoft Fortran 5.0)
3:20 Sparcstation I (fc, O2)
3:07 Sparcstation I (f2c, default opt)
1:49 NeXT (f2c + gnu c)
1:30 Macintosh IIx + 25 MHz 88000 accelerator board
1:20 Quadra 700, Absoft f77 3.1.2
0:30 Convex 240
0:30 IBM RISC/6000 model 320 (bottom of the line: the $11K one).
0:08 CRAY YMP (unicos cf77, single precision)
Don't beat me up about the seeming inconsistencies in some of these times,
cause I didn't run them! This is from a large collection of users of this code
who have reported back cpu times. My conclusion is that the 040 Macs with the
absoft compiler are the equal of 486 machines that have twice the clock
speed!
(almost)
The persistent belief that the 486 is much faster than the 040 is wrong.
Certainly for floats, the 040 is a runaway winner, despite what you hear on
much of the net. I do not have data for integer codes, so I don't know. It is
also interesting that the 040 Mac's are solidly into "workstation" terrain
for scientific calculations. Finally, the performance of the DEC alpha is
absolutely stunning. This might even make a winner out of Windows NT, but note
that the 17 second performance (faster than a Cray YMP!!!) was done with the
excellent VMS fortran compiler.
Anyone have similar data for other codes?

Subject: About XFerIt and bragging
I spoke with Steve Falkenburg after reading about the XFERIT questions and
here's his stand on the issue.
He is not supporting XFerIt anymore. It requires too much maintenance and
his job and life aren't providing him with enough extra time. As a result,
he is not cashing any checks he receives for it and does not plan on
cashing them. He also doesn't read his Internet mail, but you realized
that already.
He says that he is trying to figure out what to do with XFerIt. He would
either like to make it commercial or give it to someone else to support,
much like he did with NewsWatcher. I asked him what people could do to
contact him about this option and he waffled completely, saying that he
hasn't decided which way to go with it.
So, write the check off for zero (or put a stop payment on it if you are
paranoid) and just use XFerIt without remorse.
Now for something completely different. Both those pansies who were busy
comparing their numbers of extensions, and the fellow who advocated a
clean system too; they are all wimps. I have 50 control panels and 59
extensions. I haven't bothered figuring out which ones really contain
INITs, but I easily outclass them both. Only 45 or 50? Pah! As for the
sentiment that a clean system runs better, I dispute that. My system
does more, and that is the definition of better that I adhere to.
Did I mention that my System Folder is 35 Megs? And that's without any
Postscript fonts! My home system is bigger. ;)

While 'schomer' would probably not believe it, my Quadra 700 runs quite
reliably with 55 extensions/control panels. Of course, its got alot more
extensions that don't actually load code at startup, like various Chooser
drivers. And some of those 55 don't stay resident, they do something at
startup, like set my system's clock (tardis) and allow me to control which
ones do load (Extension manager). And I didn't really bother to think about
each control panel, to see whether it is an INIT, many are, some aren't. The
point is, the Mac system software is WONDERFULLY extensible, more so than any
other I know of. If you're like me, connected to the Internet (MacTCP), using
PathWorks (DECNet Mac), an Infoserver (LASTPort), a local CD-ROM (several
INITs), want to mount DOS disks (PC Exchange) - in short, get the most out of
your amazing computer, then you end up with lots of "INITs." BTW, the closest
any of my INITs comes to a "toy" is my screen saver (Darkside).
Yes, schomer, I sometimes have INIT conflicts (especially with COMMERCIAL
PRODUCTS e.g. AccessPC (Insignia) is not compatible with LASTPort (Digital
Equipment Corp), but the functionality that they add to my Mac makes having
them worth the bother of sorting out the problems.

In the UK you can also sidegrade from ClarisWorks 1.0 to MacWrite Pro, but

Can I use Eudora from home?
How much would this cost?

Subject: DAT Drive Problems
Jeff,
this sounds very familiar to me. I had the same experiences after
connecting my DAT drive to a Quadra 700. I hab no problems on a Mac II,
so I was sure it isn' t the DAT drive.
Two things had to be done to fix the problem:
1) I had to buy another SCSI cable, one from Apple, the Quadra 700 did
not work with any third-party cable.
2) I had to reformat the hard disk and to install the system software.
There was no way to get Retrospect working with the factory-installed
system (Maybe it was a minimal system...).
BTW: My System is a Quadra 700 20/210, 1GB ext. HD, CD150, HP 2GB DAT.
System 7.1 german. Retrospect version is v1.3Bi.
Hope that helps,
Klaus

I'd just like to confirm that there is certainly a known conflict between
DECNET, AppleTalk 58 and the built-in Ethernet on Quadra 700s. I can't
comment on other Macs with built-in Ethernet like the Centris 650 and
Quadra 950.
As for reinstalling AppleTalk 57 to cope with this problem, I would have
thought that one could do it with the 7.1 Install disks since 7.1 precedes
AppleTalk 58. It's possible that the Installer script will refuse to install
v57 over v58, in which case, try using the Installer supplied with
DEC Pathworks 1.1. I managed to do it the other day without a hitch

Subject: DuoDock and color screen > 16" (A)
This is a summary of the answers I got to my request about having a
video card and a big color screen on a DuoDock. I got four answers.
None of these answers was really negative, so in principle it should
work. There is a glitch however, reported by Elliot Bennett:
``The problem is that the Monitors control panel never remembers the
settings when you go back and forth from the built-in display to your
desktop displays. This means that you have to reset the the color
depth (and menu bar placement if you have more than one monitor
connected to your dock as I do) EACH time you switch from one to the
other. It's a ROYAL pain (and a known bug). BUT, as I said, you can
use this system if you're willing to put up with setting the monitors
CP each time you switch (and rebooting if you're doing any more than
changing the color depth).''
If I have any more answers, I'll summarize them too.

I don't know about your experience, but MS Word 4 or 5 (and most
commercial WP packages) will not work properly with KanjiTalk
6.0.7, KT 7.1, or the Kanji WorldScript module under US System
7.1. This is both from my experience, and from official MS info.
The reason is that most commercial WP programs don't use Apple's
Script Manager routines, so they don't expect to see multi-byte
characters. The result is that when you mouse on a character in a
Kanji-text line, the insertion point will appear well to the left.
Also, Word 5 does not know how long a Kanji line is, so the line-
folding is inappropriate. And Word will even let you start typing
with the insertion point in the middle of a multi-byte character,
which usually leads to unpleasent results.
TeachText, and any other application that uses the Mac's built-in
TextEdit package, will handle Kanji text perfectly. Of course, you
are then limited to 32K byte texts, by the TextEdit bug.
If you want a text-editing package that works properly with texts
over 32,000 bytes in length, you'll have to get the new Nisus 3.4,
WordPerfect 2.1.3 or later, or one of the freeware Japanese text
editors.

Subject: MacRecorder problems on IIfx
Greetings!
I recently acquired a Mac IIfx with 20Mb of RAM. I swapped in
this CPU in place of my old IIx, with my hard drives, video cards,
etc. left in place. So, it's all the same stuff, except the IIfx
itself.
Now, I find that I can't use my MacRecorder. The MacRecorder
extension comes up at startup with a big 'X' through it, so that I
can't use SoundEdit Pro (needs the driver).
Can anybody tell me what's going on here? I've got some stuff I
really want to digitize, but I can't do it until I can get the
driver to work.
I'm using MacRecorder Driver 1.02 and SoundEdit Pro 1.0. I'm
running System 7.0.1 with TuneUp 1.1.1. I'm running a whole stack
of extensions, but I get the same result with all of them off except
the MacRecorder driver and AutoDoubler.
I've tried with 32-bit mode both on and off, but it makes no
difference.
Help!

I don't pretend to have any inside information, but with all the talk
about John Scully's appearances with the first family, I've been trying
to keep an eye out. ABC recently ran a special with Clinton speaking to
children in the White House. The beginning of the program started out
in the Oval Office. As the camera panned around President Clinton's
desk and crendenza, I didn't see any computers (Mac other otherwise).
However, Clinton has an office on the upper floors that he uses for
more private work. There could be something up there.
Just my 2 cents.

Listen to your friend. The MPW editor and its associated tools are really
powerful for all kinds of text manipulations. It's easy to start a major
forest fire by getting into a discussion of Think C vs. MPW for programming,
but if you also need to do a bunch of file processing, utility-building and
general 'shell'-type work, MPW is clearly the way to go. (I happen to like
it for programming, too!)

The White House needs new computers very badly (especially after a
federal judge had all the hard drives on their PC's siezed to be
sent to the National Archives). They would really like Macs, and a
number of WH staffers already have PowerBooks.
However, redoing the WH computer system would cost several million
dollars, and Clinton is announcing budget cuts for the WH, so it's
a little hard to swing at the moment. Scully has reportedly offered
to give them a few million dollars' worth of Macs (good PR, eh?), but
for political and legal reasons the WH could not accept the offer.
Who knows, maybe they just found the money.

Subject: MacWrite Pro arrived (yawn--grrrr!)
Folks,
As many of you know, I have moaned over this service for a
couple of years that I have not found a suitable replacement
for the now abandoned-FullWrite Professional. After seeing that
MacWrite Pro could be had for $69.00 during a special offer, I
decided to purchase it, hoping that with all the ballyhoo that it has
received for the past two years, that it might be the
replacement that I'm after. As expected, I am incorrect.
First, let me explain some brief key points that I really
need in a word processor that are included in FullWrite's
commands and options:
FullWrite Professional's features that I use and need:
1) Floating sidebars that offer TOTAL word processing and
graphing features. The same commands that exist for the
word processor exist within the sidebar.
2) Documented voice annotation windowed notes. With an
automatically supplied time and date in the window bar,
a post-it note can be created in FullWrite, with voice
annotations. Also, the note can, upon the user's discretion,
automatically open and/or sound-off when that note's
document is loaded opened.
3) A very friendly outliner that supports working within
sidebars and columns. It also allows for level swaps.
4) A primitive, though workable graphics option. It supports
curved lines, circles, etc., AND the ability to attach
arrow-heads to curved lines for technical illustrations.
MacWrite Pro:
In response to the above features that I need in my line of
work, here is what MacWrite Pro offers:
1) Floating frames. These are very primitive and do not offer
the TOTAL word processor command set as FullWrite does. One
cannot place columns inside the frame, for example. This
can be done, EASILY, with FullWrite.
2) Voice annotation windowed notes. Has a neat quality option
feature in that you can select the sample rate of your
voice, thus saving space. These are NOT documented
automatically with the current time and date as is done
with FullWrite. Also, there is NO option for individual
voice annotated notes to open automatically when the document
is loaded.
3) No outliner. Amazing! Absolutely incredible for such a
program that is called "Pro".
4) The graphic ability is more primitive than I imagined when
compared to FullWrite's graphics editor. It is a simple
border creator and imported picture cropper. You cannot
draw anything. Again, I find this incredible for a program
that has the word "Pro" in its name.
5) There is no "5)" for FullWrite Professional. Anyway, I find
it interesting that BBEDIT and MacWrite Professional use
an identical document importer (Inserter). The same and
identical file types are listed. Perhaps BBEDIT is picking
up the Claris translators or something. I dunno.
For $69.00, this is a good word processor. Column manipulation
is easy and uneven columns are supported. The floating frames
can run across columns--very nice. But, this is NOT a $100.00
program in its present incarnation. Actually, I have no idea
of the list price, but I wouldn't pay over $100.00.
So, I'm still searching. With the AddIT option, maybe
someone can write the features I need. In the meantime, I pray
that FullWrite can hang tough as System 7nn continues evolving.
Note that I received MacWrite Pro just two hours ago and
perhaps, and hopefully, I'm wrong in my pre-conclusions. Also,
note that I placed the order only a couple of days ago. The
shipping department certainly is quick.

Subject: Microsoft plans to remove interactive Mail support on ALink
This item was posted to AppleLink March 18. The MS Mail bulletin board has
always been the most useful service MS has offered on ALink because it was the
only place users could post questions directly to MS and receive answers. Now
it looks like they want us to begin sending private mail to MSMAILSDK. I feel
that taking away a shared forum where everyone can read the problems and
questions that others have encountered will be a step back for MS and its
customers.
-abh
------------------------------------------
The Microsoft AppleLink Bulletin Board is being changed to become a "News" or
Read-only bulletin board. We are doing this for two reasons:
1) This bulletin board is not, and has never been monitored regularly by
Microsoft Product Support Services, with the exception of the Microsoft Mail
folder. Despite postings directing users on how to contact Microsoft for
support, many customers unknowingly posted requests for support and were
disappointed when they did not receive answers. In order to provide high
quality support and avoid disappointments, we are restructuring access to the
BBS to avoid any appearance that we can provide support in this forum.
MICROSOFT MAIL WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE SUPPORT VIA A SPECIAL ACCOUNT. FOR
SUPPORT QUESTIONS PLEASE LINK MSMAILSDK.
2) Microsoft marketing is now updating this bulletin board with new
information for your use. For some time, this has been inadvertently
neglected. Microsoft marketing support for AppleLink has been reorganized,
and
information will be updated throughout March 1993. We hope this information
will be useful, and address your needs for product information.
If you have a posting on this board, it has been or will be deleted. Most
customers could not be contacted with answers since no AppleLink ID was
typically noted. If you need technical support, please see the message
"Contacting Microsoft", and contact the appropriate support group.
We hope this will result in a bulletin board that will be more useful to you,
and help you better find resources Microsoft offers for customer service.
If you have any suggestions on future improvements to the Microsoft BBS, or
other information you'd like to see posted, please link MS.PatCr, (Pat
Crenshaw

Thank you.

Users of Nisus and Quickkeys may be interested to know that their are internet

Current subscribers who have been missing mail from these two lists should be
aware that recently the two lists have been set up on a proper listserver.
For
most people this has not been a problem at all, but for some it is recommended
that you unsubscribe and then resubscribe. Even if you have not been having
any
problems, you might want to do so to get your name properly registered with
the
listserver.
The listserver to send commands to is: listserv@syrinx.kgs.ukans.edu
The subject is ignored so don't worry about what you put in the subject line.
To unsubscribe put the following command in the message body:
UNSUBSCRIBE nisus (or UNSUBSCRIBE Quickeys)
To subscribe put the following command in:
SUBSCRIBE nisus Tom R. Smith (put YOUR name for "Tom R. Smith", silly!)
That is it! Upper case is NOT necessary, btw.
You can send more than one command at a time to the listserv so you can unsub
and sub to both lists in one message. Just make sure your syntax is correct.
Other commands that you might wish to send are:
SET <listname> MAIL ACK ->sends you a copy of your own posts
WHICH ->tells you which lists you are subscribed to
REVIEW <listname> ->sends you a list of all subscribers
HELP ->sends you a list of these and other commands

It should be noted that MS Word does not support Pub&Sub & Apple Events yet
either.
Actually, although I have been very satisfied with Nisus 3.06, the upgrade is
very nice. I recieved 3.45 yesterday and my initial impressions are very
possitive. It is noticeably smaller than 3.06 so loading is faster and has
many
very nice little touches that just make it, well, "nice". It is more polished
than before. Drag & drop is ok, although I doubt I will use it much. The
Balloon Help is surprisingly quite useful. That makes it the first major app
I
have that that is true for. The option to keep the entire program loaded in
RAM
(also from Nisus Compact) makes it even faster than before. Most of the
changes
are little things. For $20 it is definitely worth it.

Subject: NuTek and Mac Clone.
I would like to put my two cents worth about NuTek's Mac clone.
If NuTek can come up with the machine two years ago, when the Macintosh
was still twice as expensive as today, when System 7 was still in the R&D
lab, it may find itself a niche in the Mac market. Today, I can go out
and buy a Centris 610 below $1800, equipped with 68LC040 and tons of built
in features, why should I spend, say $1500, for a machine from a company
with only 30 employees? Not to mention the problem of compatibility.
Even NuTek can successfully achieve a 90%+ compatibility and survive the
potential lawsuit from Apple, no one can guarantee Apple's next version of
system software or system extensions can run on their platform. Apple may
even design features that definitely crash the machine by taking the whole
thing apart.
I believe cloning a PC is very much different from cloning the Mac, in a
sense that PC has a published standard. No single vendor ( even the BIG
BLUE ) can single handedly modify it, and all software developers will
develop software compatible to the standard. While Mac is one of its kind,
and Apple can publish new standard anytime when they see fit. Besides, Mac
is a much, much more complicated and sophisticated machine with so many
built in functions in ROM and hardware.
In hindsight I would like to see some competition which should bring us better
machine faster and cheaper. But cloning a Mac is something far too risky
with too little return today. The chief of NuTek no doubt is a technical
genius, but it just not the right time and he might have taken a wrong
target. May be we should request a second source of Macs by asking Apple
to licensing the Mac hardware/software to other companies.

The book "Dead Mac Scrolls" mentions the problem (specifically only with the
disk detect switch, but I'm sure it's applicable to the other two...) and
recommends WD-40 as a solution. You do have to take the floppy out of the
machine (and I found taking it out of the holder useful too) so that you can
avoid getting solvent in bad places (like on the read/write heads). I found
taking the drive out of its holder difficult initially, as the screws refused
to loosen. I solved that problem by _tightening_ the screws ever-so-slightly
and then backing them out. I recommend not spraying WD-40 in the drive. I
sprayed a squirt out into the room and then using the drip clinging to the
little red spray tube to touch various crevices on all three switches.
After applying the wd-40 and pressing each switch button several times, I
blotted the outside of each switch (any liquid on the outside is doing no
good)
and reassembled the drive. The improvement was distinct and immediate, but
I still had about 10% of my disks show as locked. By the next day, the
problem was gone. I had let my problem get worse over the course of almost a
year (the old style floppy write protect tabs applied to a 3.5 disk helped
apply more pressure to the switch, delaying my need to repair...), so you
may see more immediate complete results.
Tweak and Stabilant-22, which are reasonably well known contact cleaners
might be better than WD-40 for this job, but wd-40 worked for me.
One other possible glitch-- I think the screws on the floppy drive holder are
Pozidriv (looks like Phillips, but isn't). You may or may not be able to use
a Phillips driver on the screws (mine didn't work, but then I also have a
bunch of pozidriv bits.)

Subject: Telecomm program with vt100, small font, meta key
Hi...
I use my PB100 a lot for vt100 emulation. I have been a happy user of
PD and Shareware vt100 programs for some time. I am wondering if
anyone knows of a PD/Shareware terminal program that will:
(1) Provide vt100 emulation; and
(2) Let me use a small (7 pt.) font so that I can get lots of columns
and rows on my cute little screen; and
(3) Let me use the Command (or Option) key as a true "meta" key for
emacs.
I have come across a couple that win on two counts, but none that do
on all three.
Please email suggestions directly, I will post when I learn something.
Thanks!

# Subject: E-Mail Privacy and Encryption.
#
# Regarding your suggestion in TidBITs #165 that you might write
# a simple encryption stack to secure your credit card numbers
# for E-Mail: Don't bother, there are more elegant solutions
# already, with better soon to come. If you're already familiar
# with the concept of public-key encryption, skip over most of
# whatfollows and forgive me for re-educating you about it, but
# if you don't know about it, you should (IMHO).
#
# Public-key encryption is the perfect solution to the problem of
# sending your credit card number over an unsecure medium.
# Public-key encryption exploits algorithms that use two
# complimentary keys. Documents that are encrypted with Key-1
# can only be decrypted with Key-2, and vice-versa. The advantage
# of this scheme is that a company desiring your credit card
# number can publish a "public" key to everyone and anyone, and
# by encrypting your credit card with that key, you can be sure
# that no one but the keeper of it's complimentary "secret" key
# can decrypt it.
#
# Efforts are already underway to facilitate exchange of private
# data like credit card numbers, most prominently in the Digital
# Signature Standard (DSS). You may recall the controversy a
# year or so ago in various trade magazines about NSA and the
# encryption algorithms in DSS. DSS will use public key
# encryption. The controversy was between NSA, who wants the
# selected algorithms for DSS to be decryptable by dedicated
# crypto-spooks with access to a Cray, and the commercial
# encryption vendors, who have algorithms that make Crays sweat
# and the spooks lose sleep.
#
# Currently, there is a freely available public key encryption
# program available called PGP (for Pretty Good Privacy) by
# Philip Zimmermann. There's even a Mac port called MacPGP (by Z.
# Feiderowicz), which I'm pretty sure is in the Sumex archives.
# It's not the prettiest Mac implementation ever, but it works
# well and with a little encouragement from the right places
# (hint, hint) might be turned into something quite useful. It's
# a very complete application, which will even take a multi-fork
# Mac file and encrypt it into a compressed E-Mailable format
# similar to binhex, but fully encrypted. It just needs some GUI
# polishing. There are Unix and DOS versions of PGP as well, so
# it's likely to flourish if encouraged. Note that I have
# absolutely no connection to the PGP authors, I've just fiddled
# with it some and like what I see.

# Subject: MacPGP & Privacy: A Small Problem
#
# I overlooked a problem regarding MacPGP when I originally
# checked it out that you'll need to be aware of if you're
# thinking of advocating it in any way. The problem is that PGP
# (MacPGP and otherwise) employs RSA encryption to a small
# degree, and there's a company here in the USA that is claiming
# patent rights to RSA encryption. I forget the name of the
# company, but it's rumored (in netnews) that they've gone so far
# as to threaten legal action against some ftp sites in the USA
# that distribute it. They'd very likely try the same against any
# company publicly soliciting credit card sales using PGP as a
# secure transport.
#
# The most curious thing about this is that this company only
# applied for US patent rights, so it's free & legal elsewhere in
# the world. Export law prohibits RSA from being distributed by
# US companies, so that may be a contributing factor.

# Two quick thoughts on non-North-American software markets based on my
# experience of the Australian market.
#
# 1) There are very few local distributors who provide ANY form of tech
# support. (I remember talking to the head of the company who had the
# monopoly distribution rights for Dantz's DiskFit. It was at an Aussie
# MacWorld and he had the product on his stand. Problem was, I asked when
# the upgrade was arriving -- but neither he nor his employees at the stand
# knew what DiskFit was (an excellent utility for floppy based backup).) A
# few big companies with local subsidiaries (eg Microsoft) do provide some
# support, but its very low level. (Tonya does a much better job
# electronically!)
#
# 2) In these days of international mail links, Compuserve Pacific etc,
# there should no longer need be any pretence that distributors need charge
(via
# high markups) for support. Fifth Generation Systems have recently
# installed a special 800 numberfor tech support that works from Australia.
# (Australians dial 0014-800-128-493 for 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week support
# from FGS direct.) I haven't needed to use it, and haven't been inclined to
# abuse their generosity, so I haven't tried it. But there's no reason why
# other companies can't do the same thing. At the minimium, they should be
# able to provide fax support in English. (I'm sure that FGS will win from
# this move. The mind bogles at the kind of responses our local dealers and
# distributors would give to some complex incompatibility some inocent
# AutoDoubler user could stumble into.)
#
# Cheers,
#

Check out MacLink Plus/Translators, v7.0, by DataViz. US$109 in the latest
MacWarehouse catalog. It includes over 700 translators, according to that ad,
for word processing, spreadsheet, database and graphics conversions. The ad
says it comes with Macintosh PC Exchange, which is new since the version that
I
have (v6.0 -- it included Dayna's DOS Mounter).
It's not flawles, but it works well enough for me and the other Mac users in
my
Agency that I recommend it as a standard utility in any Mac buy.

Subject: using Apple CDROM drives under DOS!
Some time ago I asked for help about connecting a non-Apple CDROM drive to my
M
ac (it is a NEC CDR75).
Now I can point that with Trantor interface cards and their ROM BIOS, you can
access Apple *old* CDROM drives directly from DOS!
Pleasenote: old means those without double speed, those not MPC-aware;
drive, obviously, means that you must have a CDROM disk with data
r
eadable from your DOS application!
I think that this can be very useful. If anyone wants more info, make me
know.

As one can find anywhere else, IBM PC and clones are FAR more
popular in both mainland China and Taiwan. Macintosh do exist in
Taiwan, along with virus.
The first Chinese system I used was Chinese System 4.2. Now I
use ChineseTalk II with System 7.0.1. Worldscript offers multiple
script capability, which I don't need. Just wonder what else I am
missing.
